Mark Spergel

My name is Dr. Mark Spergel, and I am a licensed psychoanalyst with over 15 years of experience seeing adults, adolescents, and couples in my Manhattan office on East 29th Street, and more recently in Stamford, Connecticut, as well.

I have also worked in higher education for 30 years, as well as in the arts and as a corporate consultant. I have been published in each of these fields.

I am an active member of numerous professional associations, including:

  • National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis (NPAP)
  • National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP)
  • Division 39 of the American Psychological Association (APA)
  • The NeuroPsychoanalysis Foundation

How may I help you?

My approach to therapy is primarily psychoanalytic / psychodynamic, but it draws on multiple theoretical approaches, depending on the needs of the client. Individuals usually seek treatment because something in their lives isn’t working for them. When familiar coping strategies are no longer enough, a trained therapist can help.

Resources

Whether you are in crisis or simply dissatisfied with some aspect of your life and want to feel more comfortable in your own skin, therapy can help by uncovering unconscious patterns and finding new ways to address unsettling internal states and interpersonal conflicts. These can include:

  • Difficulties with coworkers and supervisors
  • Family or romantic relationships
  • Identity issues
  • Unwanted dependencies
  • Loss and loneliness
  • Inertia, anxiety, and depression
  • Suicidal ideation, rage, and compulsive behaviors
  • Other self-destructive patterns

This kind of therapy generally takes some time because the difficulties are often deep-rooted, but individuals usually begin to feel some relief early on, if not right away.

I work in partnership with several prescribing physicians, but only when medication seems advisable.

Should you desire to find out more about psychodynamic therapy and my approach to treatment, please peruse the following resources:

People seek therapy for many different reasons. These are some of the ways
people describe why they seek therapy.  Your reasons may seem similar
or different.  But whatever your reasons are, we’ll want to try
to help you with them.

“Psychotherapy” is a general term that includes many different ways of helping people with their issues and problems. Sometimes psychotherapy goes under the name of “counseling,” “mental health” services or treatment, or just plain “therapy.” On this website we most often use the word “therapy.”

Psychoanalysis is a special form of psychotherapy in which you and your therapist work together intensively on struggles about how you feel, how you view yourself, how you relate to others and how you live your life.

Empirical evidence supports the efficacy of psychodynamic
therapy. Effect sizes for psychodynamic therapy are as
large as those reported for other therapies that have been
actively promoted as “empirically supported” and “evidence based.”

Psychodynamic therapy has been caricatured as navel-gazing,
but studies show powerful benefts

Cheap and effective, CBT became the dominant form of therapy, consigning Freud to psychology’s dingy basement. But new studies have cast doubt on its supremacy – and shown dramatic results for psychoanalysis. Is it time to get back on the couch?
